Behaviour and Discipline

Discipline is viewed as evolving from the development of a positive partnership between pupils, parents and staff that reflects the Catholic ethos of the school. This partnership promotes a high standard of acceptable behaviour by all concerned in dealing with discipline. Matters are resolved within a setting of tolerance, respect and consideration for others and their property

We develop a positive approach by encouraging positive values that reflect friendship, kindness and thoughtfulness. We celebrate achievement, effort and a sense of community.

Corporal punishment is not used.

The class teacher deals with minor misdemeanours or breaches of conduct (although a child may be reprimanded by any member of our teaching staff) in a way similar to that used by any caring parent. The child is made aware of the reason for the correction and is given the chance to offer an apology at the earliest opportunity.

When necessary a child may be reported to a senior member of staff. In such a case the child will be invited to talk about the reason for the incident and to offer an explanation.

In the case of a child biting another child, we do, as a matter of policy, insist that the parents come to the school and take their child home for the rest of the session. If this occurs during the afternoon session then we require that the child remains home during the morning session of the following day. This is to underline the seriousness of the issue and also convey to children who are victims of a bite and their parents that we take such actions very seriously.

The Headteacher deals with more serious or persistent problems. In any such cases, parents will be requested to visit the school to discuss the issue and asked to co-operate fully in supporting the school discipline policy.

To deal with persistent cases, we have introduced the option of a ‘Behavioural Contract’. The school, children and parents will sign a contract that will ensure that there is not a repeat of the behaviour. It is our hope that such contracts will not be necessary.

In extreme cases it may be necessary to suspend a pupil. In the event of this occurring parents will be fully informed. The Governing Body will also be notified of the situation and there is a group of Governors who will not be involved or privy to any details so they are in a position to deal with any appeal.
